Our Model
Traditionally, multilingual parents have had to choose between schools that offer rigorous academics and schools that support culture and identity. United Academy eliminates the need to choose by creating educational programming and instruction that not only provides students with the support they need in order to access rigorous, deeper learning as they develop their English proficiency but also builds in opportunities for them to engage in identity exploration and validation, all while maintaining their language and cultural dignity.

We are committed to equipping students with the tools they need to actualize their post-secondary plan, whether that is college, the workforce, the military, or any path into the future. We accomplish this through:
The UA Way
All students experience a week long retreat and orientation at the beginning of the year to build community and understand what it means to be a United Academy student
Project Based Learning
-
Instead of taking separate English and Social Studies classes, students will engage in project blocks where they apply their learning through solving a real-world problem

-
Students receive Literacy and Social Studies credits through their projects
Integrated Support
-
We eliminate stand-alone, English Language Development blocks, and instead, provide students with a built-in dedicated language block called “Going Deeper” so they can receive the language instruction needed to grow in their English proficiency, but without being impacted by harmful labels.

-
Instead of being forced into an “English only” approach to instruction, teachers build in intentional opportunities for students to engage in translanguaging, where they are able to use all their linguistic and cognitive resources, including their preferred language, to make sense of the academic content being delivered in English.
Identity Exploration and validation
-
Students will work on Identity Portfolios each year, where they investigate and further study their own identity, as well as the identities of others in order to strengthen their sense of self and cultural competence.

-
Portfolios are showcased each year with families and community members
